Angel Dust split?
Posted by: Stéphane @ 19:48 CET

German power metallers ANGEL DUST appear to have imploded over ego clashes and money disagreements, causing bassist Frank Banx to announce his decision to relocate to the US and start up a new version of the group with guitarist Ritchie Wilkison and an as-yet-unnamed new drummer and singer.

"ANGEL DUST is not dead," Banx proclaimed via a posting in the guestbook on the group's official web site. "Ritchie Wilkison and I will soon start to work on the new album. We've got an awesome new drummer and singer and we'll re-release Into The Dark Past and To Dust You Will Decay probably [by the end of the year]. Also, we will probably tour the USA and Canada again this year."

In an earlier posting, the bassist offered some details on the disagreements that led to the group's cancellation of the Wacken Open Air and Metal Dayz festival appearances (both scheduled for this weekend).

"I'm very, very sorry that I must tell you that my band ANGEL DUST is not able to appear on Metal Dayz in Pratteln, as well as i must cancel the Wacken Open Air, 'cause my drummer and so called 'long time friend' Dirk Assmuth doesn't want to play these shows and I have no chance at all to rehearse with any German or European drummer to make these shows happen, 'cause I'm in Milwaukee USA, to play at Metal Fest. Dirk Assmuth told me that he's got something better to do than playing these two more shows for you. I tried my best to make it happen, but it's impossible. The pay of 275 euro/ $ for Wacken Open Air does not cover the costs for the flights of Nick Seelinger from Denver-based band SILENCER, who drummed the last tour with RHAPSODY in Europe and the Prog Power Fest in Atlanta / USA, 'cause Dirk Assmuth didn't want to play these shows [either]."

The gathering "B.D.L." final release date
Posted by: Stéphane @ 20:32 CET

Holland's THE GATHERING will issue their brand new mini-CD, entitled Black Light District, on September 16th via their own Psychonaut Records. According to drummer Hans Rutten, "we are still busy (will it ever stop :o) finishing our new full length, which will be released early 2003. Due to some touring we will do in August and October/November, the full-length, still without a title, is postponed again. Ow delay,... sorry... But it will be worth waiting. Ok... Let's pack our bags for some live action now..."

In other news, the singing class that THE GATHERING frontwoman Anneke van Giersbergen was supposed to teach on August 18th at JC Todo in Best, Netherlands has been cancelled. Anneke and the rest of THE GATHERING are playing at a festival in Greece that weekend.

Party HARD...
Posted by: Max @ 10:14 CET

...For this might be your last one!
American scientists found an asteroid which is on a collision course with Earth and about to hit us in February 2019. The thing is about 2 kilometres in diameter and if it will hit our little blue planet, it will cause a global disaster, changes in climate and god knows what else. Dunno about you, but personally I'm totally on board of this party! Looking forward to the mass destruction of the unworthy humans and animals and support it just from the purpose of resistance!

King Diamond, Mercyful Fate ink deals with Metal Blade, Massacre
Posted by: Matze @ 14:52 CET

KING DIAMOND and MERCYFUL FATE are on the verge of signing new record deals with Metal Blade Records and Massacre Records for the North American and European territories, respectively. Licensing deals for Japan, Australia, and South America are still pending.

In an official statement posted at KING DIAMOND/MERCYFUL FATE's official web site, King Diamond (the man) explains that as a result of increased music-downloading and CD- burning in the recent months, the bands' record sales have taken a plunge, and consequently, the groups are no longer able to command the kinds of recording advances they were able to in the past. However, to insure that the bands' albums remain of the same quality as in the past in spite of the smaller budgets, a plan was devised to record much of the music for the next KING DIAMOND album, titled The Puppet Master, at Diamond's home studio in Dallas and guitarist Andy LaRocque's Los Angered studio in a suburb of Gothenburg, Sweden.

"From now until the end of October, we will be writing all the new music," Diamond reveals. "During November and December, I will be writing the lyrics (the story is already done). "Then I will, for the first time, do demo vocals at my house, especially for [bassist] Hal Patino's sake, so that he has the vocal melodies to work his bass lines in and out of. Hal's style is to follow nothing and everything at the same time. He's all over the place without ever being in the wrong place. He is definitely my personal favorite bass player.

"Mid-February, we ship half of Andy's studio to Dallas, to be set up in my house, including his mobile ProTools system, and a bunch of outboard gear etc. etc. It's all going to be the same kind of top-quality gear that we are used to work with.

"So my house is where the actual recording process will start. We will record all rhythm guitars, bass guitars, most keyboards and possibly most of the harmony guitars there, too. These things will be mixed into a rough mix, which Andy and I will bring to a studio here in Dallas where Matt [Thompson] will be recording all of his drum tracks. Then Andy and I will do another rough mix of everything that's been recorded so far. Several copies will be made of this. Andy will bring a copy with him back to Sweden, and I will bring a copy of the rough mixes to a studio here in Dallas to record the vocals. When Andy and [guitarist] Mike [Wead] are done with their solos in Sweden, and I am done with the vocals, then Andy comes back to Dallas, where he and I will be mixing the album and mastering it too. We hope to be able to send the finished master tapes to the record labels before the summer, so we can have it released just before Halloween next year.

"This procedure might seem a little chaotic, but it's not. It will definitely be a little more work than usual, but it's the only way we can do it financially without sacrificing the quality of the product. The big savings for us will come by staying out of the big expensive studios as much as we can. This we can only do because of Andy and his Los Angered Recording studio in Sweden, which will turn into Los Angered Recording studio in Dallas for a little while. Another very important thing is that we are not going to be charged a high dollar amount per hour, which we would in a normal studio. Not for most of the time. That will give us more time to spend on all the details, which in the end will give all of you a better product to listen to."

Melanie Sisneros is Sinergy's new bassist.
Posted by: Stéphane @ 19:45 CET

Finland's SINERGY have recruited bassist Melanie Sisneros to permanently replace Marco Hietala, who left the group earlier year to join NIGHTWISH on a full-time basis.

"Sisneros [is] no stranger to playing in metal bands," reads a statement on SINERGY's official web site. "She's been playing bass for over 11 years and has lots of recording and stage experience. [SINERGY vocalist] Kimberly [Goss] has known her for over a year now and they've built a strong friendship over the course of that time.

"Melanie prepared an audition DVD with her playing five SINERGY songs. They didn't have time to send her any notes, tabs or sketches of the songs, so she learned them 100% by ear and played them flawlessly! The DVD also included live performances of her playing with two of her former bands, NEW EDEN (progressive power metal) & RAVEN MAD (thrash metal) and also live clips of her current cover band THE IRON MAIDENS (an all-female tribute to IRON MAIDEN featuring two members of the all-female hard rock band PHANTOM BLUE).

"Melanie will come to Finland at the end of august to start rehearsing with SINERGY for their upcoming tours in the autumn. Next spring she will move to Finland from California to start working with the band on their 4th album.

When asked about the new addition to the band, Kimberly responded by saying, "It's so fuckin' cool to not only have another American in the band now, but it's an added bonus that she happens to be female! Now I have someone who can truly relate to me while being on the road. I've been in so many situations where I was the only woman of like 50 guys on a tour, and that can get pretty lonely at times, believe it or not! Guys have their own way of bonding, and us girls have our way (metal girls that is!). The few times where I have been on the road with other females has always been a great experience and that made me think about how awesome it would be to have another woman in SINERGY someday. I never dreamed that we'd ever find a woman who could keep up with the playing abilities of the guys in the band, but damn...... MELANIE KICKS ASS & TOTALLY ROCKS! I can't wait to bring her on tour with us!"

SINERGY's last gig with session bassist Lauri Porra will take place at the Wacken Open Air festival in Wacken, Germany on August 3rd.

Hi there,
Knowing some of you like pagan bands as well as celtic, folk, viking and fantasy bands, check Justin's site it's just cool and promising :)
We've added him to the link section of Penny.

Of course not all the bands are listed there for the moment but i think it'll grow with the number of readers. Anyway it's a big source of knowledge and underrated or unknown bands (i've discovered some weird stuff there!).
(He SHOULD have added Skyclad in the folk metal section though! Shame on him! :P :D Hope he'll fix that soon).

Disharmonic Orchestra, Helloween, Judas Priest tribute
Posted by: Matze @ 22:12 CET

DISHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
Eight years after the release of their extraordinary "Pleasuredome"-album, Disharmonic Orchestra strike back. With 13 new songs, they continue their old style and of course add a lot of new elements, too. Harsh metal mixed with industrial elements and fresh samples are formed to a freaky and refreshing mixture. "Ahead" will be released the 09.09. and surely will cause attention. Some song titles are "Supervision", "Nine9Nine", "Dual Peepholes" or "Mindshaver".

HELLOWEEN
After the release of the 3-CD Box "Treasure Chest", Helloween are currently working together on new songs in Hamburg, which will be recorded at the end of August in vocalist Andi Deri's Mi Sueono-Studio (Teneriffa, Spain). The album will again be produced by Charly Bauernfeind, who currently just finished work on the new Hammerfall-album. The successor of "The Dark Ride" will be released in early 2003.

JUDAS PRIEST TRIBUTE
The new Judas Priest Tribute album ("A Tribute To The Priest") will also be released the 09.09, and will feature a lot of excellent tracks and artists: Annihilator ("Hell Bent For Leather"), Primal Fear ("Metal Gods"), Witchery "Riding On The Wind", Iced Earth ("Screaming For Vengeance"), Siebenbürgen ("Jawbreaker"), Hammerfall ("Breaking The Law"), Benediction ("Electric Eye"), Death ("Painkiller"), Silent Force ("All Guns Blazing"), Steel Prophet "Dreamer, Deceiver", Armored Saint "Never Satisfied", Therion ("Green Manalishi"), Thunderstone ("Diamonds And Rust"), and also Skid Row featuring Rob Halford himself with a live version of the classic "Delivering The Goods".

Skyclad: Milwaukee Festival Cancelled, BUT...
Posted by: Matze @ 16:31 CET

Skyclad are sorry to announce that they have decided to pull out of the Milwaukee Metalfest. This, we know, is bad news for our American fans who will have to wait a little longer to see the band live in the US.

The original idea behind doing this gig was to use it as a promotional visit (for mags etc.) and to possibly add a few more shows around the festival date. While there have been some developments in these areas (see below), the band feel that at the present time (i.e. 'peak season') a trip to the States to do just one show is not really viable.

On a more positive note, we would like to add that this decision has been taken with the full agreement of the Metalfest organisers (who were, after all, footing the bill), so much so that Skyclad are hoping to 're-schedule' this gig and play the 'Metalfest' in New Jersey, March 2003, along with a few more shows to promote the next album, of which recording commences in August. We will keep you posted on any developments to do with the future dates in America.

The Doors reunion...
Posted by: Stéphane @ 9:54 CET

Well, i've seen it everywhere, it is rumored the Door's keyboardist has decided to reform the Doors (of course not with Jim Morrisson...R.I.P.), but with former The Cult singer Ian Asbury.

Ian Astbury will perform with the surviving members of THE DOORS—Ray Manzerek, Robby Krieger and John Densmore—on September 7th at the California Motor Speedway, just outside L.A. County, according to Undercover.

Edit Matze: From what I've heard the gig will feature several guest singers. :) Might be similar to the concert Queen did after Freddie died...

Septic flesh news
Posted by: Stéphane @ 19:35 CET

"Greece's SEPTIC FLESH have completed work on their new album, entitled Sumerian Daemons, with producer Fredrik Nordström (i.e. HAMMERFALL, IN FLAMES, ARCH ENEMY, DIMMU BORGIR, etc.) at Gothenburg's Studio Fredman for an October release through Hammerheart Records. Among the tracks set to appear on the 13-song effort are the following:

01. Red Code Cult
02. Faust
03. Infernal Sun
04. Mechanical Babylon
05. Dark River
06. The Virtues of the Beast

According to the group's official web site, "the musical direction of Sumerian Daemons is the apotheosis of extremity in all forms and a praise to the dark ancient ways that still live on, disguised with the skin of the new age... The new sound is a huge wall made from brutal guitars, with nightmarish, mesmerizing melodies while the deep low vocals of Set<'h>. are combined with the cinematic style of a full choir directed from Chris A. and the returning dramatic voice of Natalie Rasoulis. You can also expect some ultra violent, fast-paced songs that will make your ears bleed."

In other news, SEPTIC FLESH are scheduled to embark on a 10-day Polish tour in October with VOMITORY and MALEVOLENT CREATION. Also in the works is a three-week European trek in November with DISMEMBER, SINISTER, THYRFING and other Hammerheart recording artists

Rain Fell Within already composing
Posted by: Stéphane @ 11:35 CET

Rain Fell Within are already composing for their next work. Three songs are already finished, other should follow during the next weeks. However, altogether the new material should differ clearly from both predecessors and offer emotional, atmospheric music. John and Jason are now involved in the Songwriting, so this next effort will certainly be the strongest album so far.

Crematory: One year after
Posted by: Matze @ 10:13 CET

from www.drakkar.de

CREMATORY say thanx:

Meanwhile, one year after we announced our retirement, we would like to say a special thank you to our fans that comes from the heart, because you made us who we are or were.
We felt very happy about all the fan mail and imaginative gifts we received. It triggered great emotions in us. All your feedback is and always has been unbelievably positive for us and showed us that our music was able to move a lot of things.
Likewise we owe big thanks to our record company, distributors, bookers and the press (well not all of them, just the ones that were fair to us) for their great support. Especially we would like to thank our families and friends who have always believed in us and helped integrating us back into ”normal” life.
All band members have almost cured their health problems and have found new challenges in their ”normal” jobs. Felix works in a record and clothing store, Harald as a carpenter, Matze as an electrician, Katrin as an office worker and Markus as an insurance salesman.
While being a musician has been our main job over the past years, it is now our hobby. We still all meet up to attend concerts or other events or go to jam in our practicing room to play our old hits. We are also practicing new songs that may see the light of day somehow, somewhere or sometime and could end up being released on CD.
We will probably return someday, but then it will all be different and above all things in a way no one would have ever guessed, because different we have always been.
Believe in yourself and especially in CREMATORY!

Bill Ward loves "Sabbatum"
Posted by: Matze @ 8:50 CET

Mihkel Raud sent in the following:

just a quick note to let you know that I have finally received
first comments on the "Sabbatum" CD from members of
the classic Black Sabbath line-up!

It has taken me some time to get the CD to the Sabbath guys,
but with much appreciated help from Joe Siegler of the world
famous www.black-sabbath.com , the CD was forwarded to
Ozzy, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward. Geezer Butler does not
yet have the CD but we are working on it.

According to representatives of Bill Ward, "both he and his
wife were truely floored by the CD". Tony Iommi's manager
described Tony's first impressions as "suitably baffled".

I haven't heard anything back from Ozzy as of yet, but if I
do, you'll be the first to know!

And to all of you in America, I wish you a safe and happy
Independence Day!

The Kovenant news
Posted by: Stéphane @ 19:02 CET

Norway's THE KOVENANT have entered Woodhouse Studios in Hagen, Germany to begin recording their new album, entitled S.E.T.I. (The Search For Extraterestial Intelligence), for a late 2002 European release through Nuclear Blast Records (the album will see the light of day in the US in early 2003). According to bassist/vocalist Lex Icon, "On the new album we have been fortunate enough to be accompanied by a string-quartet and a few sopranos. The style of the album is, as always, hard to describe, since the overall sound picture changes a lot after the album is done. One could categorize it as cybertrash/electro-rock/metal. I guess you'll just have to wait for a little while to find out. But then again, so do we… hahaha."

Among the tracks that are tentatively set to appear on the album are the following:

01. Planet of the Apes
02. Hollow Earth
03. GenTech Ranch
04. The Perfect End
05. Camp Narssiscius
06. Strange Days (THE DOORS cover)

Also in the works is a DVD and a remix album, both of which will surface in 2003. Says Icon, "We are also planning to release a DVD/VHS at the beginning of next year. It will be put together as a sort of 'Rockumenatry.' It will feature live clips, backstage stuff, festivals, tour stuff, music videos, interviews with all the members, fan stuff, pictures, personal video material, 'X-rated' stuff and a whole lot more... I think the fans will really enjoy what we are putting together. And, since next year will be our 10th anniversary, we will also release a remix album, featuring a lot of major bands and persons in the music scene."

Overkill: Don't buy the SPV compilation
Posted by: Matze @ 22:32 CET

from www.wreckingcrew.com:

Overkill's old label SPV is trying to release a compilation album in July that you may have heard of.

Currently our attorney's are reviewing contracts in an effort to block the release. It is NOT authorized by the band, nor did the band have ANY communication with the label as to it's content, cover, release etc. It contains absolutely NO new material. Everything on it is pulled off past releases. So don't be fooled by deceptive marketing.

This is NOT a new release!!

Save your money for the new DVD or buy "Wrecking Everything-Live".

This other is just typical record label tactics to steal from fans.

TCS release a new 3 tracks!
Posted by: Stéphane @ 20:59 CET

Have chat with our good friend and dread fool Canadave. Here's the news he gave me about his band TCS (featured on penny radio, if you dunno them check!!!):
"The Tidal Waves of Time Against" is the new 3-track Demo/Album of the excellent french prog/death act Time Curve Symmetry.

Time Curve Symmetry has kept this fusion and mastery of “genres”, this clever experimentation while being more accurate in their performance.

The three tracks (Memories from Chronos keep, Strange animals and The Flying Leaf) point out a evident construction of the songs with various rhythm changes, always remarkable and striking. The main difference lies in the appearance of a sharper manifestation of melodies. Time Curve Symmetry went to the full extent of their music and propose in this CD a multitude of unusual and catchy tunes.

Maybe you will think that three tracks is short (yet, the shortest song is a good 6:50 long !) but Time Curve Symmetry ‘s music, though not as straight to the point as a good Stratovarius or Maiden, needs to be listened until captured. Its diversity, innovation and depth will never leave you, shall you let it approach you. And remember, once caught, it is irreversible…

Check their official site (multimedia section especially).

100% good.

Overkill: Blitz is getting better
Posted by: Matze @ 15:16 CET

As most of you know, Blitz collapsed on stage at a show in Nurmberg and was taken to the hospital by paramedics. After some tests he was diagnosed as having had a minor stroke. He was held for 2 days for tests and was released. He is currently still in Europe where he is taking it easy for a few weeks. Doctors said he we make a full recovery and will be 100%! He needs to take some time off for the next few weeks and then Overkill will be in Pre production for a new studio release in Feb of next year.

Penny Radio and CARP : the final result and costs.
Posted by: Stéphane @ 8:43 CET

Royaltie rates and live365.com

Here it is. So now we know the cost of the crap CARP thing for Penny : 5$/month (only paid by the broadcaster, aka Matze). (starting from 1st August 02 and not retroactive).
Could have been worst, could have been better. I wonder what the penny staff and our readers will decide. We'll have to talk about it soon i guess.

Here's the live365 statement.

"Thank you for your interest in furthering the Radio Revolution!
We are excited by the opportunity to support artists - particularly those on smaller labels - who don't have access to traditional AM/FM channels.

To cover a portion of these payments, a Royalty Administration Fee of US $5.00 will be applied to all Live365 broadcasts starting on August 1, 2002. This will be a recurring monthly fee.

If you are currently being billed for Live365 services, this fee will be added to your monthly statement unless you decide to cancel.

If you are a Founding Broadcaster, not paying for services, you will need to enter payment information to keep your broadcast on the air. You will need to log in and go to the Order Form. (Note: This will be updated on July 1 to reflect the new Royalty Administration Fee)

All broadcasters will have a grace period of 30 days to decide what to do with your broadcast. If you choose not to pay the royalty, your broadcast will become unavailable on or around August 2nd.

Q. I have more than one station. Do I have to pay the $5.00 for all of them?

A. Yes. This fee is applicable on a per-station basis, not per broadcaster.

Q. Does this fee cover the retroactive royalty payments due as well?

A. This fee will go towards the payment of the performance royalties, as well as retroactive royalties dating back from July 1999. It also covers the legal and administrative fees we incurred in the fight against a "per-performance" rate structure.

The flat rate was kept intentionally low in order to be as affordable to as many broadcasters as possible.

Q. I play independent artists on my station. Why should I have to pay this fee?

A. Independent artists are being encouraged by SoundExchange to register to receive royalties. So many artists who have previously not been able to see a dime for the performance of their music will begin being compensated.

Q. I have a talk broadcast. Why should I have to pay this fee?

A. Even little snippets of music between talk segments are subject to royalty payments. Again, this fee supports the Live365 service to enable your broadcast. A low fee, distributed evenly across all stations, allows everyone an affordable opportunity to broadcast.

Q. But I already pay artists fees. Why should I have to pay this one?

A. Remember there are two kinds of royalties: Songwriters royalties (a.k.a. BMI, ASCAP and SESAC) and Performance royalties.

Live365 is responsible for both in the case of Personal Broadcasters. If you think you're already paying Performance Royalties, you should provide documentation of your payment to legal@live365.com

Q. Why can't I receive revenue in conjunction with my broadcast?

A. The reason you can't derive revenue for your streams is not because we're trying to be difficult. Live365 operates under the compulsory license created by the DMCA. That stipulates that we pay royalties to ASCAP, BMI, SESAC (and now SoundExchange) for the use of the music. PRO broadcasters pay their own. If you're deriving your own "benefits" from the use of this music - either via revenue through direct links to CD sales, or by not linking via live365-sanctioned means - they expect a cut. If we're deriving the revenue (in advertising, or subscriptions, etc) we cover those royalties for you.

We are looking into offering a revenue sharing program based on Preferred Member referrals. We will be reaching out to the Live365 community for feedback before deciding if and how to proceed.

Q. Why does Live365 have to charge broadcasters more money?

A. Given the state of the advertising market, our ad revenue subsidizes our costs, but does not yet exceed them. We have a lot of faith in the strength of this service, and intend to push through this slump in the advertising market. Until then, we need to cover our costs, or we'll have to figure something else out. This rate was designed to keep Live365 affordable for as many people as possible.

Q. What else is Live365 working on for broadcasters?

A. Live365 is committed to bringing unique, quality broadcasts to an ever-growing audience. To help broadcasters, there will be improved technical support, including an expanded (and redesigned) message board for broadcasters to network, and help one another. We're also preparing to release Studio365-Live 2.2 for our Live broadcasters, as well as a redesign of the homepage so listeners will be better able to find the stations they want.

In addition, we are adding Geo Statistics to our Advanced Stats package, so that you can see where your listeners are coming from. We will also be releasing the latest version of our streaming server, Nanocaster, which we expect will resolve some quality of service issues.

Q. I'm a Founding Broadcaster - currently broadcasting for free and receiving the thinner listings in the Live365 Directory. If I pay this fee, will I get the Enhanced Listings?

A. No. Your broadcast will be listed as it is now. This fee is for the artists and the costs that Live365 has incurred to deal with these royalties.

Q. How do I cancel my broadcast?

A. If you're currently paying for services, write to cancellations@live365.com and a Live365 staffer will walk you through the process.

If you're a Founding Broadcaster, there's no need to do anything. Your broadcast will be removed from the directory on August 2nd (or shortly thereafter) automatically.

Q. Actually, I want to keep my broadcast, and agree to pay the $5/month fee. How do I do it?

Cool!!! We're delighted you're with us. We're excited to be the leaders in the Radio Revolution, and look forward to supporting all of our broadcasters for the long run.

If you're currently paying for services, the royalty administration fee will automatically be added to your August 1 bill.

If you're a Founding Broadcaster go to the Order Form to enter credit card or money order information. You'll receive confirmation via email once your order has been processed.

Note: New services and fees are pro-rated for the remainder of the current month plus the next full month. Royalty Administration Fees do not take effect until August, 2002. Therefore if you sign up for a service in July, your Royalty Administration Fee on your first credit card bill will show $0 for July and $5 for August.

Q. How much time do I have to decide about this?

A. August is the first month in which the Royalty Administration Fee will be charged. As long as you sign up anytime before early August, there will be no disruption in your service.

Got other questions?

There's a discussion in the Live365 Message Board where Live365 staffers can answer your questions. "
